HOW DO I VOLUNTEER?

I've never swung a hammer before. Can I still help out onsite?

We welcome volunteers of ALL skill levels! We work hard to match projects with the skill level of different volunteers. If you're inexperienced, you might work on a painting or landscaping crew, and you will ALWAYS be led by experienced, knowledgeable house captains who can answer any of your questions.

What if I'd like to help, but not with construction or renovation work?

We have plenty of other opportunities for volunteers, including administrative work, warehouse support, registration support, photography & videography, translation, and volunteer coordination. Let us know your interest area and we'll be happy to find a role you'll love!

Where are your workday sites?

We work primarily in the cities of Oakland and Hayward.

How old do I have to be to work onsite?

You must be at least 14 years old to work on an project site. All volunteers under 18 years of age are required to fill out -- and must have their parents sign -- a separate minor waiver.

It's raining! What do I do?

Show up! There's always work that can be performed in any weather conditions.

What should I wear?

Wear sturdy, close-toed shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty or covered in paint; please leave any jewelry or valuables at home. Much of the work is outdoors, so dress appropriately for the day's weather. RTO will provide all volunteers with workday t-shirts to wear on-site.

What should I bring?

First of all, bring a water bottle. We will provide all hand tools and safety items (goggles, gloves, etc.) for the day, but skilled or professional volunteers are encouraged to bring their own power tools. Also, be sure to bring your own personal comfort items -- sunscreen, a hat, and layered clothing for weather changes.

What happens when I arrive?

Upon arrival, volunteers will receive an RTO workday t-shirt that everyone is required to wear on site. Volunteers must also sign the Volunteer Release and Waiver of Liabilities Form, fill out two name tags for the front and back of their t-shirts, and listen to a safety talk. After that, we'll go over the day's assignments and be off to work!

Work days generally run from 8 AM to 5 PM.

How many people can work onsite?

The optimal number of site volunteers depends on the site. If you'd like to bring a large group of volunteers, RTO staff and house captains will work with you to find an appropriate site for your group. Smaller groups may be paired with other organizations to meet the needs of a workday.

Is there a fee?

Nope! However, we encourage all of our volunteers to consider making a donation to support our efforts.

What else should I know?

Smoking, alcohol, and headphones are not allowed on the site. We also ask that you do not use cell phones on the work site as they are distracting and can become a safety hazard.

Due to the nature of RTO's mission, volunteers frequently serve in unfamiliar neighborhoods. Please approach each worksite and its surrounding community with an open mind and exercise sound judgment with regard to personal belongings and general safety. Our clients have endured a rigorous preview process before welcoming volunteers into the homes where they have lived for many years, and we ask that volunteers respect the dignity of each homeowner and their community.

If you have any additional questions or concerns, please contact us. House captains are available if any issues arise on a worksite.
